"It’s 1888 and Paris readies itself for the Exposition Universelle, a spectacular world’s fair staged the following year for the centennial of the French Revolution, which overthrew the monarchy in 1789. This is a fine intimate portrait of the artist's wife by French artist Albert Besnard (1849-1934) This image is hand signed and incribed in pencil lower border, the image measures 3 13/16X2 3/8 inches. "This intimate portrait presents the artist’s wife, Charlotte, in a private moment, eyes closed and head propped on a pillow. Besnard must have admired his wife’s profile. He depicted her from this angle, in both paintings and prints, no less than six time." This impression was in a show at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, in a show titled "Images of Women: 19th Century French Prints."

Simon was born in Bohemia, now the Czech Republic. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and traveled extensively throughout Europe, as well as Asia and the U.S. He lived in Paris from 1905-1913, then returned to Prague to teach at the Academy of Fine Arts. Simon was an exceptional painter and printmaker, and is best known for his atmospheric color etchings and aquatints.

The image sizes are 21 1/4 x 13 3/4 inches with a sheet size of 21 3/4 x 16 1/4 inches, 23 3/4 x 12 3/8 inches with a sheet size of 24 3/4 x 16 1/4 inches and 21 3/8 x 13 5/8 inches with a sheet size of 22 x 16 1/4 inches, all on early laid paper. Created in 1668, after Charles LeBrun. The middle plate contains a paragraph in Latin by Girardus Andranus Gallus.
