This is an original mezzotint by European artist Wallerand Vaillant (1623-1677) This is a portrait of a woman of wealth, it was created and printed circa 1670. The image measures 12 1/2X10 1/2 inches. It is plate signed in the lower right border. Vaillant was one of the first old master printmakers to use the technique of mezzotint. Printed on an early laid type paper.

Born into poverty, McBey was primarily self-taught, becoming a very well respected artist and leading figure of the British Etching Revival. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, America and the Middle East, creating remarkable etchings of the places he visited. This print has a unique perspective as well as a rich drypoint burr.

" Herbert Ogden Waters was born in Shantou, China, on November 15, 1903. The son of missionaries, he attended high school in Shanghai. Waters came to the United States to attend college, graduating from Denison University in 1926. He continued his studies at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Harvard University."
